Need some help with vancouver.bst

Rafael Cruz
Hi,

I'm willing to use vancouver.bst as my BibDesk preview style. Here what I did:

    * Installed MacTex-2010 (http://www.tug.org/mactex/)
    * Downloaded vancouver.bst (http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/biblio/bibtex/contrib/vancouver/)
    * Manually created ~/Library/texfm/bibtex/bst/
    * Moved vancouver.bst to the folder above.
    * BibDesk Preferences>Tex Preview>BibTex style "vancouver" (without cotes).

When I tried to use preview I got ***** ERROR:  unable to create preview *****

Can I get some help? Thanks in advance.

PS: Sorry if its a beginner issue, I'm new to BibDesk/Tex.

Log output:

    TeX preview generation failed.  Please review the log below to determine the cause.

Re: Need some help with vancouver.bst

Christiaan Hofman
Did you read the warning in the log? It says you probably need a \usepackage. You need one to define the \url command, as noted by the error message in the log.

Re: Need some help with vancouver.bst

Ahh! I was just about to hit "send" with an email saying the same thing Christiaan says. Try it again without the url and see if it works---it's almost certain that it will---and then you'll know that you have to add \usepackage{url} (or something that does the same thing) to the template file.

Re: Need some help with vancouver.bst

In reply to this post by Christiaan Hofman
Hi Christiaan, thanks for the quick response!

I read the log (and saw this "\usepackage"), but I have no idea how to do this. Do I have to edit preview template?
(I'm really new to BibDesk (I'm using it for 1-2 weeks)).

Thanks in advance.

Re: Need some help with vancouver.bst

Christiaan Hofman
I wonder, do you really want to use TeX? The TeX preview in BibDesk is a feature to preview TeX, it is not the other way around (i.e. don't view TeX as a system to support BibDesk previews). My point is that if you have no intention to use TeX on itself, you probably should have no interest in using the TeX preview. And when you want to use TeX, this is more a question about TeX and BibTeX rather than BibDesk, in which case you should teach yourself those languages.

And yes, you need to edit the preview tex template.

BibDesk > Preferences

Go to the TeX Preview preference pane.

You will see a button for "Edit TeX Template." Push it.

A part of a LaTeX document will open in whatever text editor your system automatically chooses, TextEdit, unless you've changed it.

insert

\usepackage{hyperref}

on the line before \begin{document}

Save the file and close it.

Try again.

I would just leave it that way if it works because you are going to have url's in references later on.

Re Christiaan's comment in the email he just added to this thread, we are assuming that you are using TeX to typeset your documents and BibTeX to store your bibliographic data.

Of course, LaTeX did run when you tried it before to get the error, so maybe it's just learning BibDesk.

Re: Need some help with vancouver.bst

Rafael Cruz
In reply to this post by Adam M. Goldstein-16
Works perfect now. (I added \usepackage{hyperref} as you suggested Adam).

Thank you Christiaan.
Thank you Adam

Sorry about this newbie question Christiaan. I've reading as much as I could about TeX, but I have a lot things to read. So that's why I came here for help.

Merry Christmas! =D

Ahh! I was just about to hit "send" with an email saying the same thing Christiaan says. Try it again without the url and see if it works---it's almost certain that it will---and then you'll know that you have to add \usepackage{url} (or something that does the same thing) to the template file.
