TeX Preview functioning with biblatex?

Arik Ohnstad
I'm trying to set up BibDesk's preview function to work with biblatex. I've copied the biblatex.bst file to the appropriate BibTex folder, and I've added the line "\usepackage[style=authoryear]{biblatex}" to the TeX template file. It seems that the biblatex installation itself is also set up correctly--the log indicates that it's finding the .cbx, .lbx etc. files. The hangup (one of the hangups?) seems to be that the .aux file is not producing a \bibdata line as biblatex expects it to (I've pasted the log below).

Has anyone gotten preview working with biblatex? I'm a newbie and I may be missing something important (maybe something else in the TeX template?).

Thanks for any help!

Evidently it can't find that citekey, and it also appears to be complaining
that the \bibliography command should be in the preamble.  This sounds
weird, but I've never tried biblatex.  Try editing previewtemplate.tex by
moving \bibliography{<<File>>} into the preamble (before \begin{document}).

Re: TeX Preview functioning with biblatex?

Arik Ohnstad
Ah, thank you, you're absolutely right--biblatex redefines what the \bibliography command does--it now only identifies the bib files, I think, while \printbibliography actually prints them. So it does need to move to the preamble. I saw that error but didn't think to move the command in the template... In any case, the bibpreview.aux now seems to be properly populated with bibdata and the cite key, and there don't seem to be any errors in the log--but BibDesk still throws an error. I'm puzzled but, unless I'm missing something subtle, the log doesn't list any errors that I can follow up.

By "throws an error" do you mean an alert dialog is displayed, or a message
printed over the TeX preview itself?  I assume the latter...

This occurs when one of the child processes returns a nonzero exit status.
In this case, it's probably latex2rtf, which is used to generate a rich text
version of the citation.  If so, you can ignore it.

Re: TeX Preview functioning with biblatex?

Sorry to be ambiguous. The PDF preview process ends with this message in the floating window: ***** ERROR:  unable to create preview ***** There is no RTF preview, I imagine for the reason you stated.

It's strange: The cite key is now properly included in the bibpreview.tex, and ought (I think) to generate a valid pdf, but the log doesn't seem to indicate any problem...

The question is: where, in the PDF or the Text tab? If it's /only/ in
the Text tab, than this is due to latex2rtf and has nothing to do with
tex or biblatex. You should realize that latex2rtf is far less
reliable than tex.

okay, that's truly an error, rather than the warning I was thinking of.

Cmd-click on the document icon in the preview panel's title bar to open the
temp directory (or cd there in Terminal...it's listed in the log output as
/var/folders/Ng/NgbtJh-OER89cAavH+EkjE+++TI/-Tmp-/bibdesk.lhHl40/bibpreview/
).  Try running pdflatex/bibtex manually in that directory, and see how you
need to tweak them.  Bear in mind that BibDesk will overwrite anything you
change there.

Seems I get 'random' errors as well. I'm also using biblatex. It seems
to be the case when some field is malformed. There's no note about it
in the log, check bibpreview.blg instead. A frequent problem for me
seem to be PubMed imports with 'too many commas in Address field'. A
pair of {braces} works wonders. Maybe this solves the mystery.

When this is solved can we add it to the wiki / docs? I'd like to set
up biblatex previewing too.

Re: TeX Preview functioning with biblatex?

Arik Ohnstad
In reply to this post by Maxwell, Adam R
Well, it turns out that the answer was very simple, and in fact I gave it in my last message (doh!). The preview template needs to be set up to reflect the division of the the standard \bibliography command into two commands with biblatex. Here's a template file that works to produce PDF previews:

\documentclass[letterpaper]{article}
\pagestyle{empty}
\textwidth = 6.5in
\voffset = -105pt
\hoffset = -120pt
\renewcommand{\refname}{}

% The following command is provided for LaTeX2RTF compatibility with amslatex.
\newif\iflatextortf
\iflatextortf
\providecommand{\bysame}{\_\_\_\_\_}
\fi

\usepackage[style=authoryear]{biblatex}
\bibliography{<<File>>}

\begin{document}
\nocite{<<CiteKeys>>}
\printbibliography
\end{document}

There is still a problem in that no RTF preview is produced. It appears that Latex2RTF is simply not compatible with biblatex yet (not surprising given that biblatex is still in beta).

Thanks for your help, Adam and others!

Hi, I'm experiencing the same problem. I've edited the template as suggested, but I still get an error message. Here it is. Any help will be much appreciated:

Re: TeX Preview functioning with biblatex?

gari
I went to Preferences > Preview and changed "Full path to bibtex" from /usr/texbin/biber to /usr/texbin/bibtex, and now the preview seems to work fine.

Strange, because I have /usr/texbin/biber in another computer and the preview works. What might the problem? Thanks.
